Teaching Style

He especially enjoys teaching the basics

Jamie wants new students to feel comfortable asking questions, making decisions, and learning through hands-on work. His workshops are relaxed and practical, with an emphasis on helping each student understand not only what they are doing, but what their tree will need next.

Students should expect to have fun and leave with a tree they are proud of — because they helped create it themselves.

Junipers

Junipers are Jamie’s favorite material because of their versatility.

They offer opportunities for dramatic movement, foliage placement, and deadwood carving — allowing the artist to push the design creatively while still respecting the character of the tree.

Finding Potential in Difficult Material

Drawn to the trees other people walk past

Jamie especially enjoys collected material and trees without an obvious design. For him, the challenge is finding the movement, structure, and character already present in the material.

There is a particular satisfaction in turning an awkward or overlooked tree into something compelling. That same approach helps students understand that good bonsai does not always begin with perfect material.

Join a club. Jamie is a strong believer in the value of local bonsai clubs, and encourages newer students to join one — the shared knowledge, ongoing education, and community can be invaluable.
What Students Can Expect

Hands-on, welcoming, and built on confident decisions

Jamie’s goal is for each student to leave with a tree they love, a clearer understanding of the work completed, and a practical plan for continuing its development at home.
