Handmade Tokoname Bonsai Pot by Kouji Watanabe

A powerful small rectangle Tokoname bonsai pot by Kouji Watanabe featuring a dramatic, hand-carved dragon relief with deep texture and darkened contrast in the carving. Finished in unglazed red clay, the pot combines rugged surface character with crisp form, and it sits on sculpted feet that give it a strong, grounded stance.

Style and Finish

  • Shape: Rectangle
  • Finish: Unglazed red clay with natural firing variation
  • Design: Dragon relief with carved detail and darkened contrast
  • Rim: Slightly flared rim
  • Feet: Sculpted feet

Dimensions

  • Outside: 4.5" x 3.5" x 1.75" tall
  • Inside: 3.75" x 2.75" x 1.25"

Best For

Well suited to compact shohin trees where the container adds story, including junipers, pines, and collected-style material. The rugged carving and unglazed clay pair beautifully with textured bark, shari, and tight foliage pads, making this pot a standout for display.

About the Potter and Kiln

This pot was made at Kakuzan Toen in Tokoname, Japan. Kouji Watanabe manages the kiln and is known for his skill in teaching wheel lessons to visitors and fellow bonsai potters, continuing the workshop’s tradition through both production and education.

Selection Note

I visited the Kakuzan kiln in November 2025 and hand selected pots in person. This listing may include additional photos from that visit, including the kiln sign and a photo with Mr. Kakuyuki Watanabe.

Photo Note

Photos are taken in consistent lighting to show clay color and carving depth. Minor kiln marks, pinholes, firing variation, or small asymmetries are normal and part of handmade Tokoname work.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
