Handmade Bonsai Pot by Shuho (Hidemi Kataoka)
This handmade round bonsai pot was made at Yoshimura Toen in Tokoname by Shuho (Hidemi Kataoka), 5th generation. I visited the kiln in November 2025 and hand-selected pots directly from what was available on site, not from a catalog.
This piece has a broad flared silhouette and a truly unusual multicolor glaze that immediately stands out. The surface blends soft pink, lavender-blue, yellow-green, and muted violet tones in a finely mottled pattern that feels playful, atmospheric, and very handmade. It is a pot with personality, but still grounded by a classic round form and elegant rolled rim.

- Style: Round flared form with a wide rolled rim and balanced taper.
- Feet: Decorative sculpted feet with a more ornate handmade character.
- Exterior: Multicolor glaze with pink, lavender-blue, yellow-green, and violet variation throughout.
- Interior: Unglazed interior with one main drainage hole and four wire holes.

Meet the Artist
Shuho, also known as Hidemi Kataoka, is a 5th-generation potter working at Yoshimura Toen in Tokoname, Japan. His family kiln is respected for its long pottery tradition and for producing bonsai containers that balance function, craftsmanship, and understated beauty. Visiting the kiln in person gave me the opportunity to select pieces that felt special in hand, each one carrying the character of the workshop and the region.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
