Deciduous Bonsai Cut Paste – White Cap
This is the cut paste we recommend for most non-conifer bonsai.
If you are pruning Japanese maples, Chinese elms, hornbeams, beech, tropicals, flowering trees, or other deciduous bonsai, this white cap cut paste is the better choice. It is a Japanese putty-style wound sealant used to cover fresh cuts after pruning or branch removal.
When a cut is left exposed, the tree has to begin closing that wound while the surface is still vulnerable to drying and contamination. Cut paste helps cover the area while the tree begins forming callus tissue and sealing the wound naturally.
This paste is thicker than a tube-style product. You take a small amount from the jar, knead it slightly, and press it over the cut. It is especially useful for branch removal, trunk work, and cuts where you want a more substantial covering than a thin paste.
Why We Like It
- Best for most non-conifers: A good choice for maples, elms, hornbeams, beech, tropicals, and flowering bonsai.
- Great after branch removal: Helps cover fresh pruning wounds and larger cuts.
- Thick putty-style seal: Easy to shape around the perimeter of a wound.
- Useful for refinement work: Helps support cleaner healing after pruning and shaping.
- Made in Japan: A traditional bonsai wound sealant used by bonsai growers around the world.
Best Uses
- Japanese Maples
- Chinese Elms
- Hornbeam, Beech, Zelkova, and other deciduous trees
- Tropical bonsai such as Ficus, Fukien Tea, and Brush Cherry
- Flowering bonsai, except where a conifer/azalea-specific paste is preferred
- Small and medium pruning cuts
- Larger branch removal where a thicker putty seal is helpful
How to Apply
- Make your cut with a clean, sharp bonsai tool.
- Clean away loose bark, debris, or sawdust.
- Take a small amount of paste from the jar.
- Knead it slightly so it is easy to shape.
- Press it directly over the cut or around the edge of the wound.
You do not need a large amount. Use enough to cover the cut surface and protect the wound while the tree starts to heal.
Which Cut Paste Should I Choose?
- Choose this white cap deciduous paste for maples, elms, hornbeams, beech, tropical bonsai, and most non-conifer trees.
- Choose the green cap conifer paste for junipers, pines, hinoki, spruce, cedar, and azaleas.
- Choose the cut paste kit if you work on a mix of trees and want both formulas ready when you need them.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
