Tinyroots Traditional Butterfly Bonsai Shears
These red-handle Tinyroots Butterfly Shears are one of the most popular bonsai tools we sell — by a lot.
We have sold over 100,000 pairs of these shears, and there is a reason they keep showing up everywhere. They are economical, versatile, easy to use, and practical for everyday bonsai work. These are the shears you’ll often see in our Bonsai Basics workshops, inside our Tinyroots Bonsai Starter Kit, and in the hands of students learning how to trim and care for their first trees.
We also wholesale these to bonsai workshop companies, garden centers, teachers, and bonsai programs because they make sense. They are affordable enough for beginners, but still useful enough that experienced bonsai growers keep a pair around for routine trimming.
Butterfly shears are one of the classic bonsai tools. The wide handle shape gives your fingers room to move, even if you are wearing gloves, and the short blades give you more control when trimming small branches, twigs, foliage, and roots.
Why Bonsai Shears Are Different
General household scissors are made for paper, packaging, fabric, or light everyday cutting. They usually pinch and crush plant material instead of making a clean horticultural cut.
Bonsai shears are different. They are made to actually cut living plant tissue.
The blades are shaped for pruning small branches, twigs, shoots, and roots with better control than household scissors. A cleaner cut is better for the tree and makes the work easier for the person holding the tool. When you are pruning a bonsai, you want to remove growth cleanly, not mash the branch, tear bark, or fight with a pair of kitchen scissors.
That is why this is such a useful first tool. It is not fancy. It is not intimidating. It is just a practical bonsai shear that does the job.

When to Use a Different Tool
These shears are great for routine trimming, but they are not meant to replace every bonsai tool.
For larger branches, use a concave cutter or branch cutter. For heavy roots, use root cutters or heavier-duty shears. For wire, use proper bonsai wire cutters, not pruning shears. Using the right tool for the job keeps your tools sharper and helps avoid damage to the tree.
