Ficus Fusion Workshop with Jesús Brito
Create a Multi-Trunk Tropical Bonsai Project
Join visiting bonsai artist Jesús Brito for a hands-on tropical bonsai workshop focused on one of the most interesting ways to build a powerful ficus bonsai over time: ficus fusion.
In this workshop, each participant will create a multi-tree ficus project using live ficus material selected for movement, trunk character, and future development. The goal is to arrange several ficus trees together so they can gradually grow into a stronger, more mature-looking bonsai composition.
This is not a quick “make it and forget it” craft project. It is a real bonsai development technique. You will leave with a project that has a clear direction and can continue improving for years.
What Is Ficus Fusion?
Ficus fusion is a bonsai-building technique where multiple ficus trees are arranged closely together and encouraged to grow as one composition over time.
As the trees grow, their trunks and roots can begin to merge, creating the appearance of a larger, older, more powerful tree. It is a great technique for tropical bonsai because ficus are vigorous, forgiving, and capable of strong growth when cared for properly.
Jesús will explain not only how to assemble the project, but why the placement, angles, contact points, and aftercare matter.
What You’ll Do
During the workshop, you will:
- Choose and position your ficus material
- Learn how to evaluate trunk movement and future design options
- Arrange the trees into a multi-trunk fusion composition
- Secure the trees properly for long-term development
- Use sphagnum moss, tubing, screws, soil, and other supplies as needed
- Learn how to care for the project after the workshop
- Understand what the tree may look like after months and years of growth
Each participant will build a 3-tree ficus fusion project. If you want to create a larger composition, you may purchase up to two additional ficus trees at the nursery during the workshop.
Why This Workshop Is Different
Most bonsai workshops focus on styling a single tree. This class is about building future bonsai material.
You are learning a technique that can help create larger trunks, better bases, and more dramatic tropical bonsai over time. For anyone interested in ficus, tropical bonsai, or long-term bonsai development, this is a very useful skill to understand.
The ficus material for this workshop is already established, with movement and character. These are not tiny starter plugs. They are workable trees with enough structure to make the class interesting.
Who This Class Is For
This workshop is best for people who have at least a little bonsai experience.
You do not need to be advanced. You should simply be comfortable handling trees, using basic tools, and following hands-on instruction. If you have taken Bonsai Basics, own a few bonsai, or want to learn a more creative tropical technique, this is a good next step.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
