A professional-looking, resealable stand-up pouch of Bonsai Thrive 180, a time-release fertilizer specifically formulated for the specialized needs of bonsai trees.

The packaging design is split vertically. The left side has a clean, textured white background featuring the product name "BONSAI THRIVE 180" in bold, black lettering beneath an orange circular logo of a stylized crane. Below the product name, several key horticultural benefits are listed: "Long-Lasting Nutrient Supply," "Low Risk of Over-Fertilization," "NPK 19-5-9 in Every Granule," and "Improved Root Development."

The right side of the bag is a deep forest green adorned with delicate, light-green line-art illustrations of leaves and branches. A large, clear, crescent-shaped window on this side reveals the actual fertilizer inside: small, uniform, spherical granules in shades of deep indigo and light blue.

At the bottom of the pouch are icons for "100% Satisfaction Guaranteed" and a green checkmark indicating the product is "Ready to Use." The weight is listed as Net Wt. 10 oz (280 g). The overall image conveys a high-quality, specialized maintenance product for bonsai enthusiasts.

A 40-Year-Old Dawn Redwood with Taper You Rarely See

Dawn Redwoods grow quickly, but exceptional taper does not happen by accident. Creating a trunk like this requires years of deliberate pruning, controlled growth and careful decisions about which branches to keep and which to remove.

Started in 1986, this Dawn Redwood has approximately 40 years of development behind it. The trunk begins with a broad, grounded base and gradually narrows as it rises toward the apex. That smooth transition in thickness gives the tree the proportions and presence of a much larger redwood.

This is the kind of taper people want in a Dawn Redwood and rarely find. Fast growth can easily produce a straight trunk with little change from bottom to top. Developing convincing taper requires meticulous work over many growing seasons. Someone had to repeatedly manage the tree’s strength, redirect its growth and patiently build the trunk section by section.

The mature bark is equally beautiful. The lower trunk has developed rugged plates in shades of reddish brown, gray and warm cinnamon. That texture immediately communicates age and contrasts beautifully with the soft, bright green foliage.

At 21 inches tall with a 16-inch spread, the tree has an impressive vertical presence while remaining comfortable to move and display. Established branches appear at multiple heights along the trunk, giving the next owner abundant material for continued refinement.

The foliage can be selectively pruned to reveal more of the trunk and create greater separation between the branches. With continued development, the crown can become more compact while the lower branches establish the visual weight needed to support the tall silhouette.

Dawn Redwood is a deciduous conifer. Its soft green foliage changes color in autumn and drops for winter, revealing the complete trunk and branch structure. Fresh new foliage returns in spring, giving the tree a completely different appearance as it moves through the seasons.

The glazed Yixing ceramic pot is a striking part of the presentation. Its deep blue glaze creates a beautiful contrast with the reddish bark and luminous green foliage. The rectangular shape and decorative feet give the tree a finished presence even as its branch structure continues to develop.

This is not a young Dawn Redwood waiting for its trunk to mature. The age, bark and difficult trunk work are already here. Its next owner can focus on refining the branching, controlling the silhouette and enjoying a tree that becomes more impressive with every season.

You can find young Dawn Redwoods. Finding one started in 1986 with this degree of taper is something entirely different.

You will receive the exact tree shown in the photographs.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
