An Absolutely Stunning 40-Year-Old Kishu Shimpaku

This is the kind of tree that stops you in your tracks. The trunk, the taper, the movement and the overall proportions are exceptional. It already has the presence of an old, established bonsai, while still giving its next owner the opportunity to help determine its final design.

Started from a cutting in 1986, this Kishu Shimpaku represents approximately 14,600 days of care. At approximately 15 cents for every day it has been alive, it is difficult to imagine a more extraordinary value.

Think about what those 14,600 days represent. Someone had to show up for this tree year after year, watering it, protecting it and giving it the time required to become what it is today. You cannot rush that process. You cannot recreate it with a young nursery plant. The only way to grow a 40-year-old tree is to give it 40 years.

The trunk is what immediately separates this Kishu from ordinary bonsai material. It emerges from the soil with tremendous strength and gradually narrows as it rises toward the apex. This exceptional taper creates the convincing proportions of a much larger and older tree.

The trunk changes direction naturally as it rises, giving the composition movement without sacrificing balance. A twisting live vein travels through areas of mature bark and weathered wood, creating beautiful changes in color and texture. There is something interesting to discover from the base of the tree all the way to the crown.

At 17 inches tall with a 20-inch spread, the proportions are nearly perfect. The tree is large enough to command attention, yet compact enough to move, maintain and display comfortably. Its broad lower branches give the composition visual weight, while the narrowing upper trunk carries the eye naturally toward the apex.

The tree has been opened and partially wired so you can clearly see its trunk and branch structure. There is still meaningful design work ahead, allowing its next owner to refine the branch placement, build tighter foliage pads and participate in the creation of the finished bonsai.

You can continue developing it yourself, bring it to a workshop or work alongside a bonsai professional. The difficult foundation is already here. You are beginning with a mature trunk, valuable primary branches, compact Kishu foliage and 40 years of patient development.

This specimen is part of our increasingly scarce collection of mature Kishu Shimpaku, much of which was acquired from Gerald Rainville. We typically sell one or two trees from this collection each week. Once these mature specimens have found their new homes, we cannot simply replace them.

As we continue wiring, styling and refining the remaining trees, their prices will increase to reflect that additional work. Purchasing one now gives you the chance to influence its future design and experience the satisfaction of watching an already remarkable tree become an increasingly refined bonsai.

This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery and will be carefully packed to protect its dramatic trunk, branches, roots, soil and mica training pot during transit.

Give the tree suitable outdoor light, water it carefully and allow it time to adjust to its new environment. Kishu Shimpaku is an outdoor bonsai and should not be grown indoors.
