A 40-Year-Old Kishu Shimpaku with a Trunk That Tells a Story

This tree is full of character. Its tall trunk rises from a strong base, changes direction through the upper structure and carries a dramatic ribbon of pale deadwood through areas of mature, reddish bark. The contrast makes the trunk feel rugged, weathered and far older than its 21-inch height would suggest.

Started from a cutting in 1986, this Kishu Shimpaku has been cultivated for approximately 40 years. Those years are visible in the mature bark, substantial primary branches, natural trunk movement and deadwood that gives the tree its unmistakable personality.

The lower trunk is especially compelling. A broad area of weathered wood travels upward from the base, passing old scars and emerging beside the living portions of the trunk. A sweeping deadwood branch extends from one side, adding movement and creating the impression of a tree shaped by difficult conditions.

The trunk continues upward before changing direction toward the crown. That transition creates energy and suggests several possible designs. The existing branches are distributed throughout the tree, with compact Kishu foliage available at low, middle and upper levels.

Now, if you know me, you know I am not the bonsai artist around here, so take my suggestion with a grain of salt. But if this tree were mine, I would be very tempted to develop it as a Shakkan.

Shakkan is the traditional slanting style of bonsai. The trunk grows at an angle while the roots, lower trunk and branch placement create a convincing sense of stability. With thoughtful styling and a possible change in planting angle during a future repot, this tree’s existing movement could become the foundation for a dramatic slanting composition.

That is simply the direction I see. A more experienced artist may look at the same trunk and find an entirely different design. That freedom is part of what makes mature pre-bonsai so exciting. The age and character are already present, but the final expression still belongs to the next caretaker.

At 21 inches tall with a 19-inch spread, this is one of the taller trees in the collection. It has a strong presence without becoming impractical to move, maintain or display. The 11.5-inch mica training pot provides a stable foundation while the tree continues its development.

The foliage has been opened so the trunk and primary branch structure can be evaluated. There is plenty of compact growth available for future pad development, including a strong crown and multiple branches that can be refined, repositioned or reduced as the design becomes clearer.

This specimen is part of our limited collection of mature Kishu Shimpaku, much of which was acquired from Gerald Rainville. We typically sell one or two trees from this collection each week. Once these 40-year-old specimens are gone, we will not be able to replace them.

As we continue styling and refining the remaining trees, their prices will increase to reflect that additional development. Acquiring this tree now gives you the opportunity to work with its existing character while making the important artistic decisions yourself.

Whether you see a future Shakkan or something completely different, this tree gives you a remarkable trunk, mature deadwood and 40 years of development to build upon.

This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery and will be carefully packed to protect its trunk, branches, roots, soil and mica training pot during transit.

Give the tree suitable outdoor light, water it carefully and allow it time to adjust to its new environment. Kishu Shimpaku is an outdoor bonsai and should not be grown indoors.
