Gerald Rainville Grown Kishu Shimpaku Bonsai with Exceptional Trunk and Refined Branching

It does not get much better than this.

This Kishu Shimpaku bonsai was started in 1986 and grown by Gerald Rainville, making it a truly special tree with nearly four decades of development behind it. The trunk, branching, movement, and refinement all speak to the time and care that went into creating this bonsai.

The tree has an incredible mature trunk with beautiful taper, aged bark, natural movement, and refined deadwood features. The foliage has been developed into well-placed pads with excellent spacing and structure. This is not rough nursery material or a young pre-bonsai. This is a highly developed Shimpaku that is ready for the next stage.

It is currently planted in a mica training pot, but this tree is ready for a ceramic bonsai pot. A strong ceramic container would elevate the entire composition and bring it much closer to a finished display-quality bonsai.

Kishu Shimpaku is one of the most desirable junipers for bonsai because of its compact foliage, strong response to refinement, and ability to form elegant, mature-looking pads. Combined with Gerald Rainville’s long-term development, this is the kind of tree that serious bonsai collectors look for and rarely find available.

Juniper bonsai are outdoor trees. They need to be grown outside in strong light with good airflow. They are not indoor bonsai.

Care Notes

Kishu Shimpaku bonsai should be kept outdoors year-round. Place the tree in a bright location with strong sun and good airflow. Water thoroughly when needed, then allow the soil to begin drying slightly before watering again. Do not keep this tree indoors.

During winter, Junipers need cold dormancy but should be protected from extreme wind, repeated freeze-thaw stress, and drying conditions. In colder climates, an unheated garage, cold frame, or protected outdoor location is often appropriate during the harshest winter weather.

Shipping Information

This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery. We pack carefully to protect the tree, pot, foliage, and soil during transit. Some minor soil movement or light shifting can happen during shipping, especially with larger living trees.

Please Note

All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final – no refunds, returns, or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out—we’re happy to help.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
