A Gerald Rainville Shimpaku Juniper with Age, Taper, and Serious Bonsai Presence
This is the exact tree shown in the photos.
This Gerald Rainville Shimpaku Juniper bonsai is the kind of material that makes people stop and look. Started in 1986, this tree has real age, a powerful trunk, great taper, established branching, and the compact size that makes it incredibly usable for future refinement.
These are the same group of Gerald Rainville-grown junipers you may have seen at the Mid Atlantic Bonsai show, where trees from this batch were worked on by Peter Warren from the UK, Kaya Mooney from Japan, and Jonas Dupuich from the USA. Most recently, Julian Tsai selected one of these trees to work on during NEBG’s Spring Celebration.
This tree has everything you want in serious juniper material: age, movement, taper, branching, deadwood potential, and dense, healthy foliage. The trunk already has rugged texture and mature character, while the branching gives the next owner many possible design options. It is not over-styled or locked into one direction, which makes it especially exciting.
It is currently planted in a mica bonsai training pot, giving the tree a stable, practical container while the next owner decides the future design direction. Style it, refine it, develop the deadwood, or eventually pair it with a higher-end ceramic pot — this tree has the foundation to become something very special.

Development Note
This tree has strong bonsai potential and can be taken in several directions. It has the structure, age, and branching needed for serious styling work. Because it is established material with age, major work should be done thoughtfully and in stages. Styling, deadwood work, and repotting should be timed carefully rather than rushed all at once.
Photography Note
This tree was photographed on May 2, 2026. The photos show the actual tree for sale at the time of photography.
Shipping Note
This tree ships from our nursery. It will be packed carefully, but some minor movement of foliage, moss, or soil may occur during transit.
California Shipping Restriction: Due to USDA restrictions, we are unable to ship Junipers, including Shimpaku Junipers, to California.
Care Note
Shimpaku Juniper is an outdoor bonsai and should be grown outside year-round. It prefers bright light, good airflow, and proper watering. Allow the soil to approach dryness between watering, but do not let the tree dry out completely. Protect from extreme heat, drying winds, and severe winter conditions, especially while in a container.
Please Note
- All trees are sold as-is

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
