A Gnarled Little Itoigawa Juniper Styled by Peter Olson

Due to California agricultural restrictions, this tree cannot be shipped to California. These restrictions are imposed by the State of California and apply to many growers shipping plants from regulated areas.

This is the exact tree shown in the photographs.

The trunk on this one has a lot going on. It twists up out of the soil, swells into a big, knobby section partway up, and throws out several jins along the way. Old bark, deadwood and live tissue all wind together, and there's something new to find every time you turn the pot.

Peter Olson set a compact, rounded crown on top of that trunk. The tree measures 10.5" from the soil to the apex with a 13.5" spread, and it's planted in a 9" Yixing ceramic pot.

The jins are still long and unrefined, which leaves the next owner room to carve and shorten them as the design matures.

Care

Itoigawa Juniper is an outdoor bonsai and should remain outside throughout the year. Give it plenty of sunlight and good airflow. Water thoroughly when the soil begins approaching dryness, but do not keep the soil constantly wet.

Check any training wire regularly and remove it before it begins cutting into the branches. Selective pruning and pinching of strong extending growth will help tighten the foliage pads while preserving healthy growing tips.

The tree requires a natural winter dormancy. Protect the pot and root system from severe cold, drying winter winds, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

Shipping Confidence

This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery. We will carefully pack it to protect the trunk, deadwood, branches, foliage, soil, and Yixing ceramic pot during transit.

All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final. No refunds, returns or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, its care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out. We’re happy to help.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
