Imported Chinese Elm Bonsai with S-Curve Trunk and Gnarly Exposed Roots
This is the exact Chinese Elm bonsai tree you will receive.
This imported Chinese Elm has the classic traditional S-curve style people look for, with a thick, smooth trunk that rises from a dramatic exposed root base. The roots are the feature that make this tree especially interesting. They grip the soil with a rugged, aged look that gives the whole bonsai more character before your eye even reaches the canopy.
At 19" tall from table to apex with a 16" spread, this tree has strong presence and a mature shape. It is planted in a 10.5" glazed Yixing ceramic pot with a bright turquoise finish that gives the tree a polished, display-ready look.
Photographed on June 26, 2026, this Chinese Elm is a little fuller now than shown in the photos. Please note that Chinese Elms often lose a noticeable amount of foliage during shipping. This is common for the species and does not mean the tree is unhealthy; with proper care, it can push new growth after it settles in.
This tree is currently being grown as a tropical Chinese Elm. If it does not sell before fall, Bonsai Outlet may transition it to cold-hardy care. In northern states, we feel Chinese Elms often perform better when grown with winter dormancy, like other deciduous trees.
Why This Tree Stands Out
- Imported Chinese Elm: A classic bonsai species with small leaves, fine branching potential, and strong seasonal character.
- Traditional S-Curve Trunk: The trunk has the familiar curved movement buyers recognize and want in a finished bonsai.
- Gnarly Exposed Roots: The base has rugged, twisting roots that give the tree a more mature and collected look.
- Glazed Yixing Pot: The 10.5" turquoise glazed pot adds color, contrast, and a clean display presentation.
- Flexible Seasonal Path: Currently grown as tropical, with the option to transition toward cold-hardy dormancy if held into fall.

About This Tree
This Chinese Elm has a strong bonsai foundation: a mature S-curve trunk, interesting branch structure, and a root base that gives the tree real personality. The exposed roots are especially appealing because they make the tree feel older, tougher, and more visually grounded.
Chinese Elms are valued for their small leaves, responsive growth, and ability to develop fine branching over time. This tree gives you a strong imported starting point with a finished trunk line and a pot pairing that already presents well.
Care Notes
This tree is currently being grown as a tropical Chinese Elm. In warm conditions, it can continue growing actively with strong light and proper watering. In northern states, Bonsai Outlet generally prefers Chinese Elms to be grown cold hardy with winter dormancy, similar to other deciduous bonsai.
If this tree does not sell before fall, we may transition it toward cold-hardy care. Chinese Elms can shed foliage in response to shipping, seasonal changes, or a change in environment. Some leaf drop after transit is normal and expected.
Shipping Confidence
This tree ships from Massachusetts and will be carefully packed to protect the bonsai, pot, trunk, roots, branches, and soil during transit. Please expect some foliage loss during shipping; Chinese Elms commonly drop leaves after being boxed and moved.
Please Note
All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final - no refunds, returns, or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out - we're happy to help.
We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
