A Compact Imported Japanese White Pine with a Powerful Trunk and Real Character
Due to California agricultural restrictions, this tree cannot be shipped to California. These restrictions are imposed by the State of California and apply to many growers shipping plants from regulated areas.
This is the exact tree shown in the photographs.
We imported this Japanese White Pine from Japan in 2024. It struggled while recovering from the stress of being imported bare-root and lost parts of its original design. The tree has now recovered, is healthy, and is ready for someone to begin rebuilding it.
This one has a powerful curved trunk, good taper, mature bark, and a rugged section of deadwood near the base. The healthy blue-green needles are gathered into strong clusters at the ends of the remaining branches. There is enough established structure to work with while still leaving plenty of room for the next owner to make the tree their own.
It is not perfect, and it is not being sold as a finished or show-ready bonsai. Some old cuts, unused branches, and open areas will need to be addressed during the redesign. That work is reflected in the price. This is an opportunity to own an imported Japanese White Pine with an impressive trunk without paying the price of a finished tree.
Keep it growing strongly, study the existing branches, and decide which features deserve to become part of the final design. With patient work over the next several seasons, this tree could develop into a very distinctive bonsai.

Care and Development
Japanese White Pine is an outdoor bonsai and should remain outside throughout the year. Give it plenty of sunlight and good airflow. Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to begin approaching dryness before watering again. Avoid keeping the root system constantly wet or allowing it to dry out completely.
This tree has recovered from the stress of importation, but its redesign should still be completed gradually. Keep it vigorous and make major decisions in stages rather than trying to finish the entire tree at once.
Japanese White Pine requires a natural winter dormancy. Protect the pot and root system from severe cold, drying winter winds, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
