A Really Nice Japanese Black Pine Styled by Peter Olson

Due to California agricultural restrictions, this tree cannot be shipped to California. These restrictions are imposed by the State of California and apply to many growers shipping plants from regulated areas.

This is the exact tree shown in the photographs.

This is a really nice Japanese Black Pine. Peter Olson styled the tree, and he did a great job opening it up, setting the branches, and giving it a clear direction.

The trunk is what makes this one special. It is thick, old, and covered in the kind of rugged bark that takes years to develop. There is good movement, plenty of character, and a strong base. The old pruning marks and natural scars only add to the tree’s mature appearance.

There is still plenty of healthy foliage and branching to work with. The main structure has already been established, so you are not starting with raw material. The next steps will be maintaining the shape, improving the foliage pads, and continuing to refine the tree over time.

The training wire is still in place and should be checked regularly. Allow the branches time to set, but remove the wire before it begins cutting into the bark.

At 15" tall with a 14" spread, this is a compact tree with a lot of presence. It is planted in a 12" unglazed ceramic bonsai pot that works very well with the trunk and overall design.

Care

Japanese Black Pine is an outdoor bonsai and should remain outside throughout the year. Give it plenty of sunlight and good airflow. Water thoroughly when the soil begins approaching dryness, but do not keep the soil constantly wet.

The tree requires a natural winter dormancy. Protect the pot and root system from severe cold, drying winter winds, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final. No refunds, returns or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, its care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out. We’re happy to help.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
