Large Old Chinese Elm Bonsai with Mature Branching and Cold-Hardy History
This is the exact Chinese Elm bonsai tree you will receive.
This is a special Chinese Elm with real history behind it. It was previously a customer’s tree, cared for as bonsai for many years, and has the kind of age, structure, and branching that only comes with time. The previous owner aged out of practicing bonsai, and this tree is ready for its next caretaker.
The canopy is broad, full, and beautifully developed, with great branching throughout. The trunk has mature character, pale bark, and a strong upright presence, while the surface roots help anchor the tree visually in the pot. This is not a young imported starter tree. It is an older, established bonsai with a more finished feel.
At 20" tall from table to apex with an 18" spread, this is a substantial Chinese Elm with presence. It is planted in a 13.5" show quality Yixing ceramic pot that gives the tree a refined, grounded presentation. It was freshly repotted in early spring.
This tree has been grown cold hardy for the last 15 years and would prefer to remain cold hardy. In northern states, we feel Chinese Elms perform best when grown with winter dormancy, like other deciduous trees.

About This Tree
This Chinese Elm has the kind of structure that makes it immediately appealing to a serious bonsai buyer. The branching is already well developed, the canopy has volume, and the trunk has the age and bark character that make the tree feel settled and mature.
Because this tree has been grown cold hardy for many years, it should remain on that path. Chinese Elms can be grown in different ways, but this tree has already adapted to seasonal dormancy and should continue to be treated like a deciduous cold-hardy bonsai.
Care Notes
This Chinese Elm should be grown outdoors with seasonal dormancy. In northern states, protect the pot and roots during the coldest part of winter, but allow the tree to experience its natural winter rest.
Please remember that Chinese Elms often lose a noticeable amount of foliage during shipping. This is common for the species and does not mean the tree is unhealthy. With proper care, it can push new growth after it settles in.
Shipping Confidence
This tree ships from Massachusetts and will be carefully packed to protect the bonsai, show quality Yixing pot, trunk, branches, roots, and soil during transit. Please expect some foliage loss during shipping; Chinese Elms commonly drop leaves after being boxed and moved.
Please Note
All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final - no refunds, returns, or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out - we're happy to help.
We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
