A Mature Dwarf African Strangler Fig with an Incredible Trunk and Wide Canopy
This is the exact tree shown in the photos.
This is a seriously impressive tropical bonsai. The trunk is thick, heavily textured, and full of movement, with a wide branch structure that gives the tree a mature, established appearance.
There is a lot of good branching throughout the canopy. Some areas are already nicely developed, while others can be shortened and refined as the tree continues growing. You can also see small aerial roots beginning along several branches. With enough warmth and humidity, those roots may continue developing and add even more character to the tree.
The Dwarf African Strangler Fig is a vigorous tropical ficus that responds well to pruning. In its native environment, this species may begin life growing on another tree and send roots down toward the ground. That natural growth habit is part of what makes it so interesting for bonsai.
The tree measures 23" tall with a 30" spread, so it has a substantial presence. It is planted in a wide 14" unglazed ceramic bonsai pot that works very well with the trunk and overall proportions.

Growth and Seasonal Interest
This species can produce aerial roots when grown in warm, humid conditions. Those roots are one of the most interesting features of strangler figs and can eventually become part of the trunk and base.
Ficus natalensis may also produce small figs under the right growing conditions, although fruiting has not been confirmed on this tree and is not guaranteed.
Photography Note
This tree was photographed on August 9, 2026. The photos show the actual tree for sale at the time of photography.
Ficus foliage can change with growth, pruning, shipping, and seasonal changes in light. Some leaf drop may occur when a tropical ficus is moved into a new environment.
Shipping Note
This tree ships from Massachusetts. It will be watered, secured, and packed carefully for shipment. Minor movement of the foliage, moss, or soil may occur during transit.
Care Note
The Dwarf African Strangler Fig is a tropical tree and must be protected from cold temperatures and frost. It can be grown outdoors during warm weather but should be brought inside before nighttime temperatures become cold.
Give the tree plenty of bright light and warmth. Water thoroughly when the soil begins approaching dryness, but do not leave the pot sitting in water. Good light, warmth, and humidity will encourage strong growth and may help the tree produce additional aerial roots.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
