Mature Kishu Shimpaku Juniper Pre-Bonsai – Massive 2.5" Trunk, Started from Cutting in 1986
Due to USDA restrictions, junipers cannot be shipped to California.
This is the exact Kishu Shimpaku Juniper pre-bonsai you will receive. Started from cutting in 1986 by Gerald Rainville, this is a rare, mature piece of Kishu material with a massive 2 1/2" trunk, strong age, and clear evidence of the work already invested in it.
We call these pre-bonsai, but this is far beyond ordinary raw stock. The trunk has serious size and character, the base has strong visual presence, and the tree already shows developed branching, deadwood, and established structure. Since acquiring these trees, we have focused on letting them grow strong and healthy. This is one we did not get a chance to style this year, leaving the next owner with a powerful foundation and a lot of creative potential.
Kishu Shimpaku is one of the most sought-after junipers for bonsai because of its compact foliage, refinement potential, and ability to form tight, elegant pads. Mature Kishu material of this age and size is exceptionally hard to find, especially from cuttings started in 1986.
We purchased most of this group, with the remaining trees expected to come to us this fall. Bonsai Outlet is your only source in the United States for these mature Rainville-grown Kishu Shimpaku pre-bonsai.

About This Tree
This mature Kishu Shimpaku has the bones of a serious bonsai. The trunk size, lower character, and existing deadwood give the tree an aged presence before styling even begins. The foliage has been allowed to grow strong, giving the next owner plenty of material to select, reduce, wire, and refine.
This is a rare opportunity for someone who wants advanced juniper material with age already built in. With thoughtful styling, this tree has the potential to become a powerful specimen-quality Shimpaku.
Care Notes
Junipers are outdoor bonsai trees and should not be grown indoors. Grow this tree outside with strong light, good airflow, and appropriate seasonal care. For more detailed care guidance, please refer to our educational bonsai resources or contact us before purchase.
Shipping Confidence
This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery. We carefully pack each tree to help protect the trunk, branches, foliage, pot, and soil during transit.
Some minor soil movement or light shifting can happen during shipping, especially with larger living trees, but every tree is packed with care by people who understand bonsai.
Please Note
All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final – no refunds, returns, or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out—we’re happy to help.
We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
