Mature Kishu Shimpaku Juniper Pre-Bonsai – Twisting 2.25" Trunk, Started from Cutting in 1986
This is the exact Kishu Shimpaku Juniper pre-bonsai you will receive. Started from cutting in 1986 by Gerald Rainville, this rare Kishu Shimpaku offers the kind of age, trunk movement, and developed character that is almost impossible to find in the United States.
This tree features a twisting 2.25" trunk with mature bark, exposed live vein, natural deadwood, and strong branching throughout the canopy. The foliage is dense and compact, with clusters of small juniper berries visible across the tree, giving it a full, established presence while still leaving room for the next owner to refine the structure.
We call these pre-bonsai, but the amount of work already built into this material is obvious. Since acquiring these trees, we have allowed them to grow strong and healthy, making this an excellent candidate for a collector or serious bonsai artist looking for rare Kishu Shimpaku material with real age and future potential.
Due to USDA restrictions, junipers cannot be shipped to California.

About This Tree
This Kishu Shimpaku has the qualities bonsai artists look for in older juniper material: compact foliage, mature bark, visible live vein, trunk movement, and established branching. The tree has not been finished as a bonsai, which leaves important creative decisions open for the next owner, but the foundation is already there.
Kishu Shimpaku is highly valued for bonsai because of its tight foliage, refined growth habit, and ability to develop clean, compact pads with proper work. Material of this age and quality is rarely available, especially from a known group of mature trees started from cuttings in 1986.
Shipping Confidence
This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery. Bonsai Outlet carefully packs each tree to help protect the trunk, branches, foliage, pot, and soil during transit.
Please Note
All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final – no refunds, returns, or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out—we’re happy to help.
We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
