An Old Stewartia with a Powerful Base, Exfoliating Bark, and Year-Round Interest
This is the exact tree shown in the photos.
I recently acquired this old Stewartia from a grower, collector, and artist. This is a large, established tree with a substantial trunk, a broad canopy, and plenty of character.
The trunk is what makes this tree special. It has a strong flared base, visible surface roots, and beautiful exfoliating bark with shades of cream, tan, muted green, and reddish brown. There is also an old trunk wound that adds another interesting feature to the tree.
Stewartia is a great species for seasonal interest. Depending on the exact species, maturity, and growing conditions, Stewartia can produce beautiful white, camellia-like flowers during the summer. Those flowers may be followed by small, woody seed capsules. I have not personally seen this tree flower or fruit, so I do not want to promise either, but the potential is certainly one of the appealing features of growing Stewartia.
The tree also offers fall color before dropping its leaves for winter. Once the foliage is gone, the trunk, branch structure, and exfoliating bark become the focus.
The canopy is full, and there is a lot of established branching to work with. This is not a finished bonsai. It is a substantial specimen pre-bonsai for someone who wants to make the branch selections, refine the structure, and take the tree in their own direction.
At 30" tall with a 29" spread, this tree has real presence. It is currently planted in a large 16" mica training pot that provides plenty of room for continued development.

Seasonal Interest
Stewartia is appreciated throughout the year. New foliage appears in spring, and white flowers may develop during summer. The leaves can provide attractive fall color before dropping, and the exfoliating bark becomes especially noticeable when the tree is bare during winter.
Flowering, fruiting, and fall color can vary depending on the exact species, climate, maturity, and growing conditions. This particular tree has not been observed flowering or producing fruit.
Photography Note
This tree was photographed on August 9, 2026. The photos show the actual tree for sale at the time of photography.
Stewartia is deciduous. Its appearance will change throughout the year, and the tree will remain bare during winter dormancy before producing fresh growth in spring.
Shipping Note
This tree ships from Massachusetts. It will be watered, secured, and packed carefully for shipment. Minor movement of the foliage, moss, or soil may occur during transit.
Care Note
Stewartia must be grown outdoors. Give the tree bright light, good airflow, and protection from intense afternoon sun during the hottest part of summer. Water thoroughly whenever the soil begins approaching dryness. Stewartia prefers consistent moisture and should not be allowed to dry out completely.
This tree requires a cold winter dormancy. Protect the pot and root system during severe winter weather, especially from drying winds and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
