They’re Back! Another Limited Release of Our Opened-Up Dwarf Hinoki Cypress
We honestly weren’t sure we’d have time to prepare more of these trees this season. But after our previous batches sold out within minutes, the emails kept coming!
Due to overwhelming demand, John Romano and several of our Year 2 Kaikou Bonsai School students spent a couple of days carefully opening up another small collection of Dwarf Hinoki Cypress pre-bonsai. We’re excited to make these available once again.
What Makes These Trees Special?
These aren’t your typical nursery-grown Hinoki Cypress. Under the guidance of John Romano, who brings more than 50 years of bonsai experience, each tree has been carefully evaluated and selectively pruned to reveal the trunk, expose interesting branching, and bring out the natural character hidden beneath its dense foliage.
We call this process “opening up” a tree. Rather than simply trimming the outside into a rounded shape, we selectively remove excess growth to expose its underlying structure and create a foundation for future bonsai development.
The result is a collection of beautiful, compact evergreens with character, movement, and plenty of potential.
Dwarf Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) are particularly well suited for bonsai. Their rich green, fan-shaped foliage, naturally compact growth, and interesting branching make them a favorite among bonsai enthusiasts.
A Great Head Start for Your Next Bonsai
Much of the initial work has already been done, but these are still pre-bonsai with plenty of opportunities for further refinement. As the trees continue to develop, you can work on branch placement, wiring, and eventually selecting the right ceramic bonsai pot.
Whether you’re an experienced enthusiast looking for interesting material or a beginner ready to move beyond basic nursery stock, these trees provide an excellent starting point.
Limited Availability – Choose Your Exact Tree
Just like our previous releases, each tree is individually photographed, and the tree you select is the exact tree you’ll receive.
Each Hinoki has its own unique trunk movement, branching, and character. Browse the available trees and choose the one that speaks to you.
Our first batch sold out in approximately 30 minutes, and the next release went almost as quickly. We know many customers missed out, which is why John and our Kaikou students made the extra effort to prepare more.

These are outdoor trees and must be grown outdoors. All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final. No refunds, returns or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, its care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out. We’re happy to help.
We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
