A Powerful Little Itoigawa Juniper Styled by Peter Olson
Due to California agricultural restrictions, this tree cannot be shipped to California. These restrictions are imposed by the State of California and apply to many growers shipping plants from regulated areas.
This is the exact tree shown in the photographs.
This is a small tree with a huge amount of character. It measures only 12" from the table to the apex, but the canopy spreads a full 18". The long branch sweeping to the right gives the tree a much bigger presence than you would expect from a shohin-sized juniper.
The trunk is the best part. It twists through the center of the tree with exposed deadwood and a strong live vein running alongside it. There are hollows, sharp bends, and plenty of movement to keep your eye moving through the design.
Peter Olson styled the tree and did a great job opening the structure so the trunk can be seen. The branches have been wired and positioned, and there is plenty of healthy foliage available for building tighter pads as the tree continues to develop.
Itoigawa Junipers are highly sought after because of their compact scale foliage, fine branching, and ability to form dense, clean foliage pads. This tree already has the trunk, deadwood, and primary structure. The next owner can concentrate on improving the pads and continuing the refinement Peter started.

Care
Itoigawa Juniper is an outdoor bonsai and should remain outside throughout the year. Give it plenty of sunlight and good airflow. Water thoroughly when the soil begins approaching dryness, but do not keep the soil constantly wet.
The training wire should be checked regularly and removed before it begins cutting into the branches. Selective pruning and pinching of strong extending growth will help tighten the foliage pads while preserving healthy growing tips.
The tree requires a natural winter dormancy. Protect the pot and root system from severe cold, drying winter winds, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
