A professional-looking, resealable stand-up pouch of Bonsai Thrive 180, a time-release fertilizer specifically formulated for the specialized needs of bonsai trees.

The packaging design is split vertically. The left side has a clean, textured white background featuring the product name "BONSAI THRIVE 180" in bold, black lettering beneath an orange circular logo of a stylized crane. Below the product name, several key horticultural benefits are listed: "Long-Lasting Nutrient Supply," "Low Risk of Over-Fertilization," "NPK 19-5-9 in Every Granule," and "Improved Root Development."

The right side of the bag is a deep forest green adorned with delicate, light-green line-art illustrations of leaves and branches. A large, clear, crescent-shaped window on this side reveals the actual fertilizer inside: small, uniform, spherical granules in shades of deep indigo and light blue.

At the bottom of the pouch are icons for "100% Satisfaction Guaranteed" and a green checkmark indicating the product is "Ready to Use." The weight is listed as Net Wt. 10 oz (280 g). The overall image conveys a high-quality, specialized maintenance product for bonsai enthusiasts.

Rare Exposed Root Japanese Black Pine Pre-Bonsai

These are phenomenal trees! We’re releasing just two exceptional Exposed Root Japanese Black Pines from our collection of four. The remaining two will stay at our nursery, where Peter Olson and John Romano will continue developing them into finished bonsai.

What makes these trees so remarkable is their nearly 16 inches of exposed roots, creating dramatic, twisting structures that give them incredible character and the appearance of great age.

Known as Neagari in Japanese, this style takes many years to develop. Young pines are grown in deep containers, with their roots carefully trained downward and gradually exposed over time. As the roots thicken and develop bark, they become an important part of the bonsai’s design. It’s a labor-intensive process that simply cannot be rushed.

Very few growers specialize in this technique, although Gerald Rainville in Canada is one of them. Mature examples like these are difficult to find, with many originating from older Japanese imports.

Both trees are growing in Japanese Tokoname training pots and offer tremendous potential for further refinement. We consider these specimen-quality pre-bonsai that, with proper development, could become show-worthy trees in just a few years.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
