Seed-Grown 1986 Japanese Black Pine Bonsai – Compact Rugged Trunk with Spreading Canopy
This Japanese Black Pine has a compact, powerful presence with the kind of rugged trunk character that immediately catches your eye.
Started from seed in 1986, this bonsai has spent nearly four decades developing mature bark, exposed surface roots, compact movement, and a broad canopy filled with healthy green needles and active spring candles. It has the look and feel of an old pine in a size that is easy to display and enjoy.
The trunk is the heart of this tree. It is thick, weathered, and full of texture, with bark that shows real age. At the base, exposed roots flare outward into the soil, giving the tree a grounded, stable feeling. The branch structure spreads wide from the trunk, creating a fuller silhouette and a strong sense of balance.
This is a great choice for a collector looking for a mature Japanese Black Pine with visible age, seasonal vigor, and refinement potential. The tree already has strong bones, healthy growth, and a compact footprint, making it a rewarding pine to continue developing over time.
The tree is planted in an unglazed ceramic bonsai pot, which pairs well with the rugged bark, strong roots, and classic character of Japanese Black Pine.

About This Tree
This Japanese Black Pine was started from seed in 1986 by Gerald Rainville. While that history adds provenance, the real value is visible in the tree itself: rugged bark, mature trunk character, exposed roots, compact proportions, and decades of development.
