A Powerful Little Japanese Black Pine Styled by Peter Olson

Due to California agricultural restrictions, this tree cannot be shipped to California. These restrictions are imposed by the State of California and apply to many growers shipping plants from regulated areas.

This is the exact tree shown in the photographs.

This is really nice Japanese Black Pine styled by Peter Olson. It may be shohin size, but it has a thick trunk, a wide base, and a full 14" canopy. It looks and feels like a much larger tree.

Peter set the branches and gave the tree a good overall shape. There is a lot of healthy foliage, plenty of branching, and a strong structure underneath the canopy. The training wire is still in place so the branches can continue setting.

The trunk and base are what make this tree stand out. You get a substantial trunk, visible surface roots, mature bark beginning to develop, and a broad canopy in a compact package. Japanese Black Pines are prized because they respond so well to careful candle work, needle management, pruning, and wiring. As this tree continues to mature, the bark and foliage can become even better.

This is not a finished tree, but the hard part has already been done. The basic design is there. The next owner can concentrate on improving the foliage pads, shortening the silhouette, and continuing the refinement Peter started.

Care

Japanese Black Pine is an outdoor bonsai and should remain outside throughout the year. Give it plenty of sunlight and good airflow. Water thoroughly when the soil begins approaching dryness, but do not keep the soil constantly wet.

The training wire should be checked regularly and removed before it begins cutting into the branches. Continued candle work, needle management, and selective pruning will help maintain the compact shape and improve the foliage pads.

The tree requires a natural winter dormancy. Protect the pot and root system from severe cold, drying winter winds, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery. We will carefully pack it to protect the trunk, wired branches, foliage, soil, and ceramic pot during transit.

All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final. No refunds, returns or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, its care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out. We’re happy to help.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
