A 40-Year-Old Kishu Shimpaku I Would Develop as a Shakkan

Due to USDA regulations, we cannot ship Junipers to California.

If this were my personal tree, I would develop it as a Shakkan, or slanting style bonsai.

The trunk already has the movement, visual tension and sense of direction that make Shakkan so compelling. It rises from a strong base before leaning into the composition, creating the impression of an old juniper that has spent decades growing against persistent wind or reaching toward the available light.

Started from a cutting in 1986, this Kishu Shimpaku has approximately 40 years of age behind it. That time has created a mature trunk, textured bark, areas of weathered wood, established primary branches and an abundance of compact foliage to support its next stage of refinement.

What I love about this tree is that the design is not static. Your eye follows the trunk upward as it changes direction, then continues into the branching and rounded crown. The movement feels natural, and the existing foliage provides several options for strengthening that direction.

In a Shakkan design, the trunk leans while the roots and lower trunk create a feeling of stability. The branches are then positioned to support and balance that movement. This tree already offers that visual relationship. Its broad base anchors the composition, while the upper trunk and crown create energy above it.

The prominent deadwood branch adds another layer to the story. It extends away from the trunk like the remains of a limb lost to weather, reinforcing the impression of an old tree that has adapted to difficult conditions. The contrast between that pale wood, the reddish bark and the green live tissue gives the trunk tremendous character.

At 17 inches tall with a 17-inch spread, the tree has balanced proportions and a strong presence without being difficult to move or display. The compact 9.5-inch mica pot keeps the visual footprint small, making the tree itself feel even more substantial.

The foliage is dense, healthy and distributed throughout the structure. There is enough growth to create distinct pads, open negative space around the trunk and build a directional crown that strengthens the slanting design. Selective pruning and wiring will reveal more of the mature branching hidden beneath the foliage.

This is not a finished bonsai, and I would not want it to be. The most exciting design decisions are still available to its next owner. You can develop it yourself, bring it to a workshop or work with a bonsai professional to create a Shakkan that emphasizes the tree’s natural movement.

This specimen is part of our limited collection of mature Kishu Shimpaku, much of which was acquired from Gerald Rainville. We typically sell one or two trees from this collection each week. Once these 40-year-old specimens are gone, we will not be able to replace them.

As we continue opening, wiring and refining the remaining trees, their prices will increase to reflect that additional development. This is an opportunity to acquire a mature Kishu while you can still make the design your own.

Shipping Confidence

This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery and will be carefully packed to protect its trunk, branches, roots, soil and mica training pot during transit.

Give the tree suitable outdoor light, water it carefully and allow it time to adjust to its new environment. Kishu Shimpaku is an outdoor bonsai and should not be grown indoors.
