This One Started Life as a Slice of Leaf

Due to California agricultural restrictions, this tree cannot be shipped to California. These restrictions are imposed by the State of California and apply to many growers shipping plants from regulated areas.

This is the exact tree and pot shown in the photographs.

The story behind this Willow Leaf Ficus clump is pretty interesting. It started through tissue culture, essentially as a small slice of leaf growing in a sterilized nutrient medium. That tiny piece eventually produced roots and was transferred into soil.

The tree then spent several years growing at our Florida nursery. In spring 2026, it was moved north to our Massachusetts nursery and planted in the light green ceramic pot shown here. We estimate the clump to be approximately five years old.

It has grown into a compact little mass of trunks, branches and narrow foliage. The canopy is full, the base has some character and there is plenty inside for someone who enjoys thinning and selecting branches.

Tree Details

  • Species: Willow Leaf Ficus
  • Form: Clump style
  • Origin: Started through tissue culture
  • Estimated age: Approximately five years
  • Height: Approximately 8 inches from the table to the apex
  • Spread: Approximately 8 inches
  • Pot: Approximately 6.5-inch glazed ceramic pot
  • Potted: Spring 2026
  • Shipping location: Our Massachusetts nursery

Developing the Clump

The foliage is currently dense, so the next step could be selective thinning to reveal more of the trunks and interior structure. You could also let it grow for a while longer before deciding which trunks and branches should become part of the final design.

Because it was moved into this ceramic pot in spring 2026, we would allow it time to continue establishing before doing another round of heavy root work.

Willow Leaf Ficus Care

This is a tropical tree. It can live outdoors during warm weather and should be gradually acclimated to stronger sunlight. Bring it inside before nights turn cold and place it beneath a strong grow light or in the brightest window available.

Water thoroughly when the soil begins approaching dryness. Do not allow the root ball to dry completely, and avoid leaving the pot standing in water. Regular trimming during active growth will help keep the foliage compact and encourage finer branching.

Shipping

This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery. We secure the ceramic pot, protect the soil surface and support the canopy before packing it for travel.

Please Note

All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final. No refunds, returns or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, its care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out. We’re happy to help.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
