Jack Hoover Bald Cypress “Knee” Bonsai – Guy Guidry Graft in a One-Of-A-Kind Handmade Hoover Pot

This is the kind of Bald Cypress you only see when a serious collection gets released.

We recently acquired most of Jack Hoover’s bonsai collection, and this tree is a perfect example of what made Jack’s material so special: bold, memorable trees paired with pottery you will never see anywhere else. This is not just a bonsai — it’s a complete composition as Jack envisioned it.

The foundation of this tree is a Bald Cypress “knee” collected 25+ years ago. The cypress was then grafted to the knee by Guy Guidry (renowned American bonsai artist, teacher, and collector based in Louisiana) over 15 years ago. That history matters, because you’re not buying “a cypress” — you’re buying decades of story, intention, and craftsmanship in one piece.

The knee base is the showstopper. It’s sculptural, ancient-looking, and full of natural movement and hollowing that gives instant age from across the yard. From that base, the trunk rises with authority, creating a tall, confident silhouette that will anchor a serious collection.

Seasonal note: Bald Cypress is deciduous. The warm rust-colored foliage you see is normal seasonal color while dormant. In the growing season it will push fresh green growth and completely change the mood of the tree.

And then there’s the pot. Jack’s collection is defined by his pottery — 100% unique, deeply collectible, and impossible to replace. We would love to keep this pot in our own collection, but it complements the tree perfectly, and the tree should stay exactly as Jack built it.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
