The Juniper Bonsai Artists Love Most: Shimpaku Juniper Bonsai (Juniperus chinensis) Outdoor Tree
Ask a room full of bonsai artists to pick one juniper, and many will say Shimpaku.
Its foliage is soft, fine, and tightly packed, which makes it a pleasure to shape into pads. These trees come with a gently curving trunk and a full, rounded canopy. At about 6 years old and 5-8" tall, each one has the compact, mature look Shimpaku is famous for.
This is an outdoor tree, so plan to keep it outside all year. In return, it's tough, long-lived, and ready for years of wiring and refinement as your skills grow.
Add a Shimpaku to your bench today.

Care Notes
Keep it outside year-round in full sun, at least 6 hours a day. Water when the top of the soil starts to dry, and don't let it stay soaked. Junipers need a cool winter rest, so leave it outdoors and give it shelter, like a cold frame or unheated garage, once nights fall below about 20°F. Junipers don't live long indoors.
Please Note
This tree is sold online only and is not individually photographed. The photo shows a representative tree. Yours will vary naturally in shape, branching, and pot color or style, so every tree is one of a kind. Questions about care or placement? Just reach out. We're happy to help.
We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
