Mature Kishu Shimpaku Juniper Pre-Bonsai – Powerful 2.75" Trunk, Started from Cutting in 1986
This is the exact Kishu Shimpaku Juniper pre-bonsai you will receive. Started from a cutting in 1986 by Gerald Rainville, this is an exceptionally rare piece of mature juniper material with a powerful trunk, established deadwood, compact Kishu foliage, and serious specimen potential.
This tree has the kind of trunk character that cannot be rushed. The approximately 2.75" trunk shows mature movement, pale deadwood, exposed live vein, aged bark, natural hollows, and strong visual contrast. The foliage is compact and well-positioned, giving the next owner a powerful starting point for continued refinement.
Kishu Shimpaku is one of the most desirable junipers for bonsai because of its tight foliage, strong response to refinement, and ability to form clean, elegant pads. This tree is still listed as pre-bonsai, but decades of development are already present in the trunk, branch structure, and overall character.
Due to USDA restrictions, junipers cannot be shipped to California.

About This Tree
This Kishu Shimpaku has the bones collectors look for: an aged trunk, strong deadwood features, compact foliage, and a structure that already suggests the future bonsai within the material. The pale deadwood running through the trunk creates dramatic contrast against the reddish live vein and green foliage.
Since acquiring this group of trees, Bonsai Outlet has focused on keeping them healthy and strong. This tree offers an outstanding opportunity for a collector or experienced bonsai artist to continue the refinement work on rare, long-developed Kishu Shimpaku material.
Shipping Confidence
This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery. Bonsai Outlet carefully packs each tree to help protect the trunk, branches, foliage, pot, and soil during transit. Some minor soil movement or light shifting can happen during shipping, but each tree is packed with care by people who understand bonsai.
Please Note
All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final – no refunds, returns, or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out—we’re happy to help.
We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
