Handmade Bonsai Pot Purchased from Shuho

This handmade oval bonsai pot was purchased directly from Shuho in Tokoname during my visit in November 2025. I hand-selected pots directly from what was available on site, not from a catalog.

I want to be fully transparent with this piece. Although I purchased it from Shuho himself, I am not 100% certain that this pot was personally made by Shuho. The pot was acquired directly through him, but because I cannot fully confirm authorship, I am presenting it exactly that way.

This piece has a soft oval form with a broad rolled rim, quiet proportions, and a natural unglazed finish. The overall design feels understated and versatile, making it an excellent choice for deciduous material, soft-branching trees, or compositions where you want the pot to support the tree without pulling too much attention.

  • Condition note: This pot is new.
  • Style: Oval form with a broad rolled rim and gently sloping walls.
  • Feet: Integrated rounded feet formed into the base.
  • Exterior: Unglazed dark brown clay with subtle natural variation and a soft matte finish.
  • Interior: Unglazed interior with four drainage holes and one center tie-down hole.

Dimensions:

  • Outside: 12.5” x 10” x 3.5”
  • Inside: 11.25” x 8.75” x 2.75”

Photo Note: Listing photos were taken in natural light. Clay tone may appear slightly different depending on screen settings and lighting conditions.

Shipping Info: This pot will be carefully packed and fully insured for safe transit.

Meet the Artist

Shuho, also known as Hidemi Kataoka, is a 5th-generation potter working at Yoshimura Toen in Tokoname, Japan. His family kiln is respected for its long pottery tradition and for producing bonsai containers that balance function, craftsmanship, and understated beauty. Visiting the kiln in person gave me the opportunity to select pieces that felt special in hand, each one carrying the character of the workshop and the region.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
