Handmade Bonsai Pot by Yamafusa (Takehiko Koie)

This handmade rectangular bonsai pot was made in Tokoname, Japan by Yamafusa (Takehiko Koie). I purchased this pot directly through another artist and guide while in Japan.

This is a sharp, confident rectangle with a rich glazed finish and very strong presentation. The form is clean and architectural, with a broad rim, slightly tapered walls, and enough depth to feel substantial without becoming heavy. It has the kind of structure that works especially well with more formal deciduous material, compact flowering trees, or smaller conifers that need a pot with clear lines and real presence.

The glaze is what makes this piece stand out. At first glance it reads as a deep midnight blue, but in better light it opens into layered indigo, inky violet, and almost black tones. That subtle movement gives the pot depth and sophistication without making it flashy. It feels polished, serious, and very display-friendly.

What I like most here is the balance between the crisp geometry of the rectangle and the richness of the surface. Some glazed rectangles can feel cold or overly rigid. This one does not. The glossy finish softens the form just enough, while the warm unglazed interior reminds you that it is still very much a handmade Tokoname pot. It is a strong companion piece for a quality tree and the kind of container that instantly elevates a composition.

Meet the Artist

Yamafusa, associated with Takehiko Koie, is a respected Tokoname pottery name known for clean, practical bonsai containers with lasting appeal. Tokoname pots are appreciated for their craftsmanship, usability, and regional character, and pieces like this show how a disciplined form paired with a rich glaze can create a pot that feels both highly functional and distinctly collectible.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
