Handmade Tokoname Bonsai Pot by Kakuzan (Kakuyuki Watanabe)

A refined round shohin bonsai pot finished in a soft gray crackle glaze with subtle natural variation. The gently flared rim and calm silhouette create a classic look, while three small feet lift the pot slightly for a clean presentation on a stand or display table.

Style and Finish

  • Shape: Round
  • Glaze: Soft gray crackle glaze with natural variation
  • Rim: Flared rim with a smooth rolled edge
  • Profile: Shallow to medium depth with a wide planting area
  • Feet: Three feet

Dimensions

  • Outside: 5.5" x 2.5"
  • Inside: 5" x 1.75"

Best For

A great fit for shohin conifers, shimpaku, compact pines, and refined accent compositions. The soft gray glaze complements deep green foliage, aged bark, and seasonal color without competing with the tree.

About the Potter and Kiln

Kakuzan pots come from Kakuzan Toen, a long-running Tokoname kiln in one of Japan’s historic pottery centers. The workshop is rooted in generations of local ceramic tradition, with pieces formed from Tokoname clays and fired for the crisp, durable finish collectors look for.

Kakuyuki Watanabe, working under the artist name Kakuzan, is known for refined workmanship and sensitivity to traditional form and proportion. His work reflects quiet elegance through clean lines, balanced silhouettes, and thoughtful detail.

Selection Note

I visited the Kakuzan kiln in November 2025 and hand selected several pots in person. Photos included show the kiln and a visit with Mr. Kakuyuki Watanabe.

Photo Note

Photos are taken in consistent lighting to show glaze character. Minor kiln marks, pinholes, crackle patterns, or variations are normal and part of handmade Tokoname work.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
