Kiyonal Bonsai Cut Paste Sealer

Kiyonal Cut Paste is one of those small bonsai supplies that becomes very useful once you start doing more detailed pruning work.

After a branch is removed, the exposed cut can dry out, crack, or stay vulnerable while the tree begins to heal. Kiyonal helps cover and protect that fresh cut while the tree starts forming callus tissue. Think of it as a clean, easy-to-use wound sealer for bonsai work.

This is a Japanese-made cut paste with a smooth, toothpaste-like consistency. It spreads easily, making it especially useful for smaller pruning cuts, detail work, and places where you want a cleaner finish than a heavier putty-style paste.

We especially like Kiyonal for deciduous trees, tropicals, Japanese maples, elms, and other trees where small cuts and clean healing matter. It is also useful around graft unions or delicate work where you want protection without packing on a heavy layer of paste.

Why We Like It

  • Easy to apply: The smooth paste spreads quickly over fresh cuts.
  • Cleaner finish: Less bulky than traditional putty-style cut paste.
  • Great for smaller cuts: Ideal for pruning, trimming, and detail work.
  • Useful for grafting: Helps protect graft unions and delicate wound areas.
  • Made in Japan: A trusted bonsai wound sealant used by hobbyists and professionals.

When to Use Kiyonal

  • After pruning small or medium branches
  • After removing twigs or secondary branches
  • On deciduous trees where clean healing is important
  • On tropical bonsai after branch removal
  • Around graft unions or delicate cut areas
  • Anytime you want a smooth, neat seal instead of a thicker putty

How to Apply

  1. Make your cut with a clean, sharp tool.
  2. Wipe away loose debris or excess moisture from the cut area.
  3. Apply a small amount of Kiyonal directly over the wound.
  4. Spread it evenly so the cut surface is covered.
  5. Recheck the area over time as the tree heals and calluses.

You do not need a thick glob. A thin, even layer is usually enough to cover and protect the cut.

How Is Kiyonal Different from Traditional Bonsai Cut Paste?

Kiyonal and traditional bonsai cut paste are both used to protect fresh cuts, but they feel and work a little differently.

Kiyonal Cut Paste is smoother and easier to spread. It is best when you want a thin, clean seal on smaller cuts, fine pruning work, deciduous trees, tropicals, or grafting work.

Traditional putty-style cut paste, like the paste included in our Bonsai Cut Paste Kit, is thicker and more clay-like. It is usually better for larger cuts, heavier branch removal, and situations where you want to pack material around the edge of a wound.

If you are doing regular light pruning, Kiyonal is the easier product to reach for. If you are removing larger branches or doing heavier structural work, a traditional putty-style cut paste may be the better choice.

Which Cut Paste Should You Choose?

  • Choose Kiyonal for smaller cuts, cleaner applications, detail pruning, grafting, Japanese maples, elms, tropicals, and refined bonsai work.
  • Choose traditional cut paste for larger cuts, heavier branch removal, trunk chops, and more substantial wound coverage.
  • Keep both on hand if you regularly prune a variety of bonsai. Many growers use Kiyonal for fine work and putty-style paste for larger wounds.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
