BioGold Japanese Bonsai Fertilizer

Imported organic bonsai fertilizer for outdoor and cold hardy trees.

BioGold is one of the most trusted fertilizers in bonsai, especially for outdoor trees. At our Massachusetts nursery, this is the fertilizer we use most often on cold hardy bonsai, and it is what many of our local customers and bonsai professionals prefer for trees kept outdoors.

If you are new to bonsai and wondering why BioGold is so popular, the answer is simple: it feeds steadily, stays cleaner than many traditional organic fertilizers, and is easy to use. The pellets can be placed directly on the soil surface or tucked into fertilizer cups to keep them contained.

BioGold has a lower NPK than stronger growth fertilizers like Bonsai Thrive 180, which makes it a great choice when you want steady, balanced feeding without aggressively pushing soft growth. For outdoor bonsai, especially established or refined trees, that gentler approach is often exactly what you want.

Why Use BioGold?

  • Imported from Japan and widely used by bonsai enthusiasts and professionals
  • Organic fertilizer designed for slow, steady feeding
  • Ideal for outdoor and cold hardy bonsai, including many trees grown in temperate climates
  • Low odor after watering compared to many traditional organic fertilizers
  • Cleaner on the soil surface and less likely to attract pests, birds, or animals
  • Triangular pellets help keep the fertilizer from rolling off the pot
  • Can be used directly on the soil or placed in fertilizer cups

Best For

BioGold is a great fertilizer choice for outdoor bonsai, cold hardy bonsai, refined trees, specimen trees, and trees where you want healthy, consistent feeding without trying to force heavy growth.

We commonly recommend BioGold for customers growing outdoor bonsai such as maples, elms, junipers, pines, azaleas, hornbeams, and other cold hardy species.

How to Use

Place BioGold pellets on the soil surface and water normally. With each watering, nutrients are slowly released into the soil.

You can place the pellets directly on the soil or use fertilizer cups to keep them organized and easier to remove when needed.

Recommended dose: approximately 5 pieces for every 5 inches of pot size.

Pellets generally provide a slow, steady release of nutrients over the course of about two months, depending on watering frequency, weather, and growing conditions.

Fertilizer Analysis

  • NPK: 3.5 - 3.7 - 3.3
  • Minor elements: Iron 0.12%, Copper 50 mg/kg, Molybdenum 27 mg/kg, Sulfur 0.5%

BioGold vs. Stronger Growth Fertilizers

BioGold is not designed to be the strongest or fastest fertilizer. Instead, it is valued for clean, steady, reliable feeding. If you are trying to push a lot of growth on tropical bonsai, pre-bonsai, or development material, a higher-NPK fertilizer may be more appropriate.

For established outdoor bonsai, cold hardy trees, and trees where balanced growth is more important than aggressive growth, BioGold is an excellent choice.

Note: Pellets are purchased in bulk and repackaged for customer use.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
