Bonsai Fertilizer Baskets

A clean, reusable way to keep bonsai fertilizer pellets in place.

Bonsai fertilizer baskets are small plastic cups designed to hold pellet fertilizers on the soil surface. They are especially useful with fertilizers like BioGold, Bonsai Thrive, and other organic or slow-release bonsai pellets.

These baskets do not eliminate fertilizer smell. If a fertilizer has an odor, it may still smell inside the basket. What they do very well is keep fertilizer contained, organized, and easier to manage during watering.

Why Use Fertilizer Baskets?

When fertilizer pellets are placed directly on the soil surface, they can shift, break down, wash into the soil, or move around when you water. Fertilizer baskets help keep the pellets in one place so nutrients can slowly release through normal watering.

They also make it easier to remove old fertilizer when it is time to refresh your feeding program.

Best For

  • BioGold Japanese Bonsai Fertilizer
  • Bonsai Thrive pellets
  • Organic pellet fertilizers
  • Outdoor bonsai
  • Cold hardy trees
  • Mature bonsai
  • Clean display setups
  • Growers who want easier fertilizer cleanup

What Fertilizer Baskets Do

  • Keep pellets in place when watering
  • Help prevent fertilizer from washing around the pot
  • Make old fertilizer easier to remove
  • Keep the soil surface looking neater
  • Allow water to flow through the basket and reach the fertilizer
  • Help organize feeding by spacing fertilizer around the pot

What Fertilizer Baskets Do Not Do

  • They do not prevent fertilizer smell.
  • They do not replace fertilizer.
  • They do not automatically make fertilizer stronger or weaker.
  • They do not mean you can over-fertilize safely.

How to Use

  1. Place a small amount of pellet fertilizer inside the basket.
  2. Close the lid securely.
  3. Press the basket spike gently into the bonsai soil.
  4. Place baskets evenly around the soil surface.
  5. Water normally, making sure water reaches the baskets.
  6. Replace or remove fertilizer as it breaks down or when your feeding schedule changes.

Do not pack the basket completely full. Leaving some space allows water to move through the fertilizer more easily.

How Many Baskets Do You Need?

The number of baskets depends on the size of the bonsai pot, the fertilizer being used, the species, and the time of year.

For smaller bonsai, one or two baskets may be enough. For larger pots, use several baskets spaced evenly around the soil surface. Always follow the feeding guidance for the fertilizer you are using.

Helpful Tip

When watering, make sure water passes through the fertilizer baskets. If the pellets stay completely dry, they will not release nutrients properly.

Reusable and Easy to Clean

After the fertilizer has broken down or your feeding season is finished, remove the baskets, rinse them, and reuse them for the next application.

What You Get

Includes reusable bonsai fertilizer baskets for holding pellet fertilizer on the soil surface.

Recommended use: keeping pellet fertilizer contained, easier to remove, and better organized during normal bonsai watering.
