Imported Japanese Kumayanagi Pre-Bonsai – Rare Berchemia racemosa with Textured Trunk
This is the exact Kumayanagi pre-bonsai you will receive. Imported from Japan, this Berchemia racemosa is a rare and unusual deciduous pre-bonsai with a rugged, aged-looking base and naturally graceful branching.
Kumayanagi is the Japanese name for Berchemia racemosa, a flowering woody species admired for its flexible, vine-like branches, distinctive green leaves, and ability to develop the appearance of age quickly. This tree has a strong lower trunk with rough, textured bark and multiple branching lines that give it excellent potential for future bonsai refinement.
This is the kind of uncommon material that appeals to collectors and shohin bonsai enthusiasts looking for something outside the usual species list. We do not receive many Kumayanagi from Japan, and we may not be able to source more once these are gone.

About This Tree
This Kumayanagi has a compact footprint with a visually strong base, giving it the kind of character that is difficult to create quickly from young material. The trunk texture, lower movement, and branching make it a promising candidate for continued refinement as a small bonsai.
The foliage is bright and healthy, with soft oval leaves that contrast beautifully against the older-looking bark. As the tree develops, the species is also known for producing clusters of fruit that can transition through attractive colors as they mature.
Kumayanagi is known as a late “waker” in spring. Its wood color and delayed budding can sometimes make it appear inactive longer than expected, which is a normal quirk of the species and useful to know before purchase.
Care Notes
Kumayanagi is an outdoor bonsai species and should be grown outside with appropriate seasonal care. For more detailed care guidance, please refer to our educational bonsai resources or contact us with questions before purchase.
Shipping Confidence
This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery. We carefully pack each tree to help protect the trunk, branches, foliage, pot, and soil during transit.
Some minor soil movement or leaf movement can happen during shipping, but every tree is packed with care by people who understand bonsai.
Please Note
All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final – no refunds, returns, or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out—we’re happy to help.
We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
