Rare Imported Kumayanagi Pre-Bonsai – Berchemia racemosa with Upright Branching
This is the exact Kumayanagi pre-bonsai you will receive. Imported from Japan, this Berchemia racemosa is a rare deciduous pre-bonsai with upright movement, a textured lower trunk, and a compact canopy of bright green foliage.
Kumayanagi is the Japanese name for Berchemia racemosa, a flowering woody species known for its flexible, vine-like branches, distinctive leaves, and ability to develop an aged appearance quickly. This tree has a slender upright structure with branch movement near the top and a character-filled base already showing rough bark texture.
This is uncommon material for collectors and shohin bonsai enthusiasts who want something more distinctive than standard deciduous bonsai species. We do not receive many Kumayanagi from Japan, and we may not be able to source more once these are gone.

About This Tree
This Kumayanagi has a graceful upright form with a relatively narrow spread, making it a good candidate for a compact deciduous bonsai composition. The trunk rises cleanly from the base before dividing into upper branches with fresh foliage concentrated near the top.
The lower trunk has visible texture and age, contrasting nicely with the smooth younger branches and soft green leaves. This tree offers a lighter, more vertical structure than some of the wider Kumayanagi in this group.
Kumayanagi is known as a late “waker” in spring. Its wood color and delayed budding can sometimes make it appear inactive longer than expected, which is a normal quirk of the species and useful to know before purchase.
Care Notes
Kumayanagi is an outdoor bonsai species and should be grown outside with appropriate seasonal care. For more detailed care guidance, please refer to our educational bonsai resources or contact us with questions before purchase.
Shipping Confidence
This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery. We carefully pack each tree to help protect the trunk, branches, foliage, pot, and soil during transit.
Some minor soil movement or leaf movement can happen during shipping, but every tree is packed with care by people who understand bonsai.
Please Note
All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final – no refunds, returns, or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out—we’re happy to help.
We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
