Create a Mountain Landscape in Miniature
This handmade Ibigawa-style rock immediately makes you want to start planting. Its tall mountain profile, multiple peaks, natural openings and deep crevices give you plenty of places to add moss, small azaleas, Shimpaku junipers, accent plants or succulents.
Rock plantings are a great way to learn perspective and scale. They are often associated more closely with Penjing than traditional bonsai because the goal is to create an entire landscape. The stone, trees and groundcover work together instead of placing all the attention on one individual tree. Many bonsai enthusiasts will recognize the influence of the famous rock plantings created by Masahiko Kimura in Japan.
This is not a natural rock. It was handmade to resemble the dramatic Ibigawa stones used in Japanese bonsai and Penjing displays. It is constructed around a metal framework using polymer-modified cement and sand, then colored with traditional Chinese ink.
One of the advantages of a handmade rock is that it already has useful planting areas. You can pack soil and moss into the crevices, secure small trees using the existing wire and build a convincing mountain planting without trying to drill or modify a solid natural stone.
Please be aware that the dark surface is intentionally coarse and sandy. Small particles and some of the black coloration may rub or flake off when the rock is handled. It is a little like touching a dry, gritty asphalt surface. This is normal for the material and finish, and it is not an indication that the rock is damaged.
You will receive the exact handmade rock shown in these photographs.

Shipping Confidence
This handmade planting rock ships from our Massachusetts nursery and will be carefully packed to protect its peaks, openings and irregular edges during transit.
Because the finish is intentionally gritty, a small amount of loose sand, pigment or surface material may be present in the packaging when it arrives. This is normal for these handmade rocks.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
