A Practical Bonsai Tool Kit for Beginners
I assembled this kit because it includes the same basic tools I regularly recommend to beginners who visit our retail nursery.
You do not need to spend several hundred dollars on professional Japanese tools to begin working on bonsai. You need a practical set of tools that will let you prune, repot, work the soil, and start shaping your trees properly. This kit covers those basics at a very affordable price.
I do not always recommend stainless-steel shears, but these are a great option for someone getting started. They are sharp, comfortable to use, and can also cut small-gauge bonsai wire to length. That makes them particularly useful when you are building your first tool collection.
One important clarification: the shears can cut small wire from the roll, but they do not replace traditional bonsai wire cutters when removing wire from a branch. Proper bonsai wire cutters are designed to cut wire without damaging the bark. As your collection and skills grow, that is a tool you will eventually want to add.
For now, this kit gives you everything you need to start pruning, repotting, cleaning, and performing basic bonsai work—and the included leather roll keeps everything together between projects.
We only have eight of these kits available.
What’s Included
- Stainless-Steel Bonsai Shears – For general pruning, trimming roots, and cutting small-gauge wire to length.
- Concave Branch Cutter – Creates a cleaner, slightly recessed cut when removing branches.
- Root Rake and Spatula Tool – Helps loosen compacted soil, separate roots, and work soil around the pot.
- Single-Prong Root Hook – Useful for opening dense root systems during repotting.
- Bamboo Chopstick – One of the simplest and most useful bonsai tools for removing old soil and settling fresh soil around the roots.
- Tinyroots Leather Tool Roll – Keeps the complete set protected, organized, and easy to carry.
A Great First Bonsai Tool Set
This is not intended to be the last tool kit you will ever own. It is designed to be a sensible and affordable first set—one that includes the tools you will actually use while learning the art of bonsai.
Whether you are purchasing your first bonsai or finally moving beyond household scissors and kitchen utensils, this kit gives you a proper place to start.
We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
