Common questions
Which bundle is right for my tree?
Go by how the tree grows. Tropical bonsai like ficus and jade keep growing indoors or in warm climates. Cold-hardy bonsai like juniper, maple, and pine live outdoors and go dormant in winter. Flowering bonsai like azalea and bougainvillea want a lower-nitrogen, bloom-focused fertilizer.
Do I need MicroTotal if I already use a fertilizer?
It is worth adding. MicroTotal is a 5-0-0 supplement with nitrogen, iron, magnesium, and trace elements. It has no phosphorus or potassium, so it works alongside one primary fertilizer rather than replacing it. Apply it every six to eight weeks on a separate day.
Liquid or pellets?
Either works. Uncle Bill’s 3-3-3 is mixed into your watering can. Pellet fertilizers like BioGold, Bonsai Thrive 180, and Hanasaku sit on the soil and release a little with every watering; a fertilizer basket keeps them in place and makes them easy to replace. Uncle Bill’s can also be used alongside a pellet fertilizer.
When should I stop fertilizing?
Feed only while the tree is healthy and actively growing. Outdoor trees get a rest from fertilizer once they go dormant for the winter. Uncle Bill’s 0-10-10 is for a short late-season stretch before that, not for feeding a dormant tree.
How much fertilizer should I use?
It depends on the fertilizer and the pot size. See our fertilizer usage amounts chart, or the feeding guide for your type of tree.
