40+ Year Cutting-Grown Shimpaku Itoigawa Juniper Bonsai with Dramatic Jin & Shari (One-Of-A-Kind)
This is one of those trees customers recognize immediately because it has been on display at our nursery for years with a “Not For Sale” sign. It’s been part of the collection people stop to look at, study, and talk about. But as we continue to acquire new material, we also need to release trees so others can enjoy them in their own collections.
This is a Shimpaku Itoigawa Juniper, a variety prized for its refined foliage, strong response to training, and long-term potential for highly detailed pads. This tree is cutting-grown (not collected), and we estimate it is 40+ years old.
What makes it exceptional is the feeling of age and struggle it carries: the jin and shari are bold and convincing, with strong contrast between the deadwood and the live veins. This is NOT a tanuki. The deadwood character you see is part of the actual tree.
The foliage tone you’re seeing right now is because the tree is dormant. As it wakes up and pushes growth, the color will transition back toward the healthy greens you expect from a strong Itoigawa. The silhouette is already powerful, and the next owner can refine pads, detail branching, and continue the development with intention.
