Old Itoigawa Shimpaku Juniper – Collector-Grown with Exceptional Nabari
This is the kind of Itoigawa you don’t see every day.
Years ago, we purchased a local collector’s bonsai collection, and this was one of the standout trees. It was originally purchased from NEBG as a small tree, then patiently developed for decades. The previous owner estimated the tree to be around 45 years old, and it shows in all the right ways.
Look at the base. The nebari on this Shimpaku is the headline: wide, grounded, and visually “old” the moment you see it. Above that, you’ve got an aged trunk line with natural movement and plenty of character already built in.
To be transparent: this tree will benefit from a restyle/refinement. That’s not a downside, it’s the opportunity. The foundation is here (and it’s rare): strong roots, mature structure, and Itoigawa foliage that can be refined into tight, clean pads with the right hands and the right plan.
