A Dense Little Ilex with a Clean Shape
Due to California agricultural restrictions, this tree cannot be shipped to California. These restrictions are imposed by the State of California and apply to many growers shipping plants from regulated areas.
This is the exact tree and pot shown in the photographs.
Schillings Dwarf Ilex naturally grows with small leaves and dense branching, which makes it a very workable bonsai subject. This tree has a sturdy trunk, visible surface roots and a full rounded canopy with plenty of interior branching.
It produces small flowers in spring, but this variety does not produce fruit. We want to make that clear because anyone purchasing it for berries will be disappointed. The appeal here is the compact foliage, dependable growth and the way it responds to regular trimming.
The green rectangular ceramic pot is a good match for the foliage and gives the tree a clean, finished appearance.

Care and Development
This is an outdoor bonsai. Give it plenty of sun for compact growth, with some afternoon protection during periods of intense summer heat. Water thoroughly when the soil begins approaching dryness, and do not allow the root ball to dry completely.
New growth can be allowed to extend and then trimmed back to maintain the rounded canopy. The tree already has plenty of branching, so continued selective thinning will help keep light and air moving through the interior.
In colder climates, provide winter protection from prolonged hard freezes. An unheated garage, cold frame or similarly protected space can help shield the roots while allowing the tree to remain dormant.
Shipping
This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery. We secure the ceramic pot, protect the soil surface and support the canopy as needed before it leaves us.

Please Note
All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final. No refunds, returns or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, its care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out. We’re happy to help.
We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
