Imported Chinese Elm Bonsai with Powerful Trunk Base
This imported Chinese Elm has a strong, chunky trunk base and a really nice bonsai shape already started.
The lower trunk is the first thing that stands out. It has a powerful base, visible root flare, and a natural opening near the trunk that gives the tree a lot of character. From there, the trunk rises with movement into a rounded upper structure with multiple branch pads already in place.
The tree has been pruned so the branching is easy to see. There is plenty of foliage to keep it attractive now, but the structure is still open enough that you can continue refining it. With regular pruning, this elm should continue to fill in and tighten up nicely.
The branching gives the tree a balanced, layered look, with foliage placed around the trunk instead of one heavy mass of green. The small Chinese Elm leaves help keep the tree in scale, and the pale textured bark adds age and interest.
It is planted in a 13" blue glazed Yixing ceramic drum-style pot. The deep blue glaze gives the tree a bold presentation and works especially well with the pale trunk and green foliage.

Care Notes
Chinese Elm is a strong and forgiving bonsai species. It likes bright light and should be watered when the soil begins to dry slightly. Do not let the tree completely dry out.
In warm climates, Chinese Elm can be grown outdoors most or all of the year. In colder areas, it should be protected from freezing temperatures and overwintered appropriately. Regular pruning will help the branches fill in, tighten up, and develop better ramification over time.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
